Here are the activities that we have started to work on with all our students from the 3rd to 4th grade of ESO.

Task 1: Postwar recipes

The first activity of this project pretended to make our students learn from their grandparents' lives and the historical background that they lived through. The activity consists of asking their grandparents for what dishes they used to eat when they were children. Then, their grandparents,  mainly grandmothers, gave them the recipes in detail - ingredients, instructions and tips-.

After taking notes, our students had to write their grandnanies' postwar recipes in English. Here there are some sample recipes.

Task 2. Documentaries

It is time to be a journalist!

Our students wrote a set of questions to interview their grandparents. Once the questions were ready, our amateur journalists interviewed and recorded their grandparents. Then they started to edit the recorded material, adding some pictures, music and  in-voice in Catalan and some English subtitles.

Here are some sample videos.

Task 3. Visit a Catering College

The Catering College is situated in Girona. It’s quite well-known as the cook, Joan Roca - the owner of the 2nd best restaurant in the world in 2014-  studied there.

In this college one can get some professional training as cooks and bakers,  but also as other professions related to this field.

There are a lot of classrooms. Ones are for magistral lessons and other for practical uses. Some of the classrooms are the following ones: the wine class that contains many types of wines and liquors on the shelves, the presentation classroom, which is used for welcoming anyone who visits the school, the theatre class, where they do animation shows to hotels, the bar and restaurant, where the students do their training  and we had lunch. And finally, we went to see the kitchen, the most important part of the school. They make all types of practices inside the kitchen such us practical examinations of cooking.

Task 4. Visit to a local market

On Wednesday 28th and Friday 30th May our students from the 3rd grade of ESO accompanied with 25 German students visited the local indoor market in Salt.

There students divided in teams in order to interveiw sellers and customers about the local products and facilities. They had the chnace to learn a bit more about this nice indoor market.

Afterwards, they attended two cooking workshops on Catalan cuisine in the Cooking room, located in the same market. A young cook taught them how to cook four traditional Catalan recipes.

  • Pollastrons in the Catalan way

  • Seafood cannelloni

  • Scrambled eggs with mushrooms and tender garlic.

  • Catalan custard

Task 4. Restaurant reports

Students in groups have visited several restaurants. Next, they wrote a report informing the location, the opening hours, the list of dishes, the prices, ...  Here is a list of the best restaurants in the area of Girona.

Virtual tour

Some of our students visit several restaurants to film a bit ann then to create a virtual tour.

Here you have a selection of the best virtual tours.

Task 5: "Food Here and There, Then and Now" Magazine

Bescanó

Gütersloh

Gütersloh was the last meeting point for the students from Catalonia and Germany to finish the last part of the common magazine.

The German chapter revised their cuisine from its origins to present days.

Bescanó was the first TV set to record the magazine which dealt with the traditional Catalan cuisine.

The students also revised the Civil War diet which our students' grandparents experienced and struggled with during that hard time of their life when the food rutine was obviusly so simple and tough.

Task 6: "Food Here and There, Then and Now" Book

Both schools worked together to create a cooking book.

It has 3 sections. The first and largest section is a selection of post-war, traditional and modern Catalan and German recipes, written by the students. Some of the recipes are accompanied with a video with English subtitles.

The second section contains the report and the virtual toour of some of the best restaurants nearby both villages, Bescanó and Gütersloh.

Finally, in the thirds section there is a recopilation of cooking items, with an English description and a picture.
